The Marvel Rivals role queue answer is still no. As of August 25, 2026, the live game has open hero selection, NetEase has not announced a role-queue release date, and the latest Version 20260820 patch notes do not add one.

That does not make the player debate fake. A lobby with several instant Duelist locks can feel doomed before the doors open. But role queue would also change matchmaking, swapping, and team creativity—not just force somebody else to play Vanguard.

Quick answer: Marvel Rivals does not have role queue in Quick Match or Competitive. NetEase’s public position favors flexible team compositions, and there is no confirmed date for that position to change.

Does Marvel Rivals Have Role Queue in 2026?

No. Season 9.5 uses open queue, so players can select heroes from Vanguard, Duelist, or Strategist after matchmaking and change heroes during the match.

Role queue would move that choice earlier. You would pick a role before matchmaking, then enter a team with reserved role slots. A fixed 2-2-2 setup—two players per role—is the version people usually picture, but NetEase has never confirmed that format for Marvel Rivals.

Marvel Rivals open queue compared with a hypothetical 2-2-2 role queue

Role lock is related but not identical. It can mean limiting how many heroes from one role a team may select without making every player queue for a role first. Players often use both terms for the same idea, which is why some discussions sound more settled than they really are.

The current state is simple: open selection is live; role queue and role lock are not announced features.

That makes one regular teammate more valuable than another hour of arguing about the system. A duo can cover two roles on purpose, agree on a backup before queueing, and leave only four slots to chance.

What NetEase Has Said About Marvel Rivals Role Queue

NetEase has been consistent about the design goal. In a January 2025 interview with game director Guangyun Chen, he framed open team building as part of Marvel Rivals’ identity: hero design and Team-Ups should create more composition choices instead of locking every match into one template.

The team revisited the question in August 2025. Lead combat designer Zhiyong said role-based matchmaking could create longer waits while still leaving skill gaps between teams, according to a report on the developer’s matchmaking breakdown.

That later explanation also pointed toward making less-picked roles more interesting. The Season 9.5 update continued expanding and adjusting the roster, but it did not announce role queue.

Could NetEase change its mind? Of course. Live-service teams change systems when the data or player experience demands it. But “players are asking for it” and “the feature is coming” are two different claims, and only the first is true today.

⚠️ Watch Out: Leaks, survey screenshots, and community wishlists are not release announcements. Treat role queue as unconfirmed until it appears in official patch notes or a developer update.

Why Players Want Role Queue—and What It Would Cost

The main case for role queue is predictability. You would know somebody entered the lobby intending to cover Vanguard and somebody else intended to cover Strategist. Hero select becomes less of a negotiation, and players can practice one role without being pressured to fill another.

The tradeoffs are real:

  • Longer waits for popular roles: If many more people queue Duelist than Vanguard or Strategist, the matchmaker cannot invent the missing players.
  • Less mid-match freedom: A player locked to one role cannot solve every matchup by crossing into another role.
  • More stable compositions: Teams gain role coverage, but unusual formations become harder or impossible.
  • Different rank questions: A player’s Duelist level may not match their Vanguard level, so one shared rating can still produce rough games.

Open queue has the opposite profile. It protects experimentation and fast role swaps, but it asks six strangers to coordinate before they have built any trust.

I believe that is why this argument never dies: both sides are describing a real problem. One side hates forced filling; the other does not want the game’s team-building freedom traded for a cleaner hero-select screen.

How to Build Balanced Marvel Rivals Team Roles Now

You do not need to pretend every open-queue lobby will cooperate. You need a short plan that gives cooperation a chance.

Three-call Marvel Rivals open-queue plan for main roles, sustain, and early swaps

Call a main role and one backup

Say “Strategist main, Vanguard backup” instead of “I can fill.” The first line gives the team useful information. The second often means nobody knows what you will actually play.

Check sustain before the first fight

Do not demand a specific composition as if it were law. Ask whether the team has enough frontline, damage pressure, and sustain for its actual plan.

A dive-heavy group and a slower objective group solve those jobs differently. The useful question is not “Are we 2-2-2?” It is “Who starts the fight, who keeps them alive, and who follows the target call?”

Swap after one clear failure

One lost fight can reveal that the backline has no peel or the frontline cannot hold space. Make one adjustment early, then test it. Four fights of blame followed by a last-second swap is not adaptation.

Queue with one reliable flex player

One known teammate removes a full slot from the hero-select lottery. A regular duo can agree on role coverage before matchmaking, keep calls short, and swap without turning the decision into a public argument.

Marvel Rivals Role Queue FAQ

Will Marvel Rivals add role queue?

NetEase has not announced plans or a release date for role queue. Its public explanations have favored open composition building, so any claim that role queue is “confirmed” needs an official source.

Is there role lock in Marvel Rivals Competitive?

No role lock is announced for the live Competitive mode as of August 25, 2026. Players choose from the available hero roster after matchmaking rather than entering fixed role slots.

What is the difference between role queue and open queue?

Role queue asks you to choose a role before matchmaking and usually restricts you to that role in the match. Open queue lets the team choose and swap across roles after the lobby forms.

Would role queue force a 2-2-2 team?

Not automatically. A developer could build role queue around 2-2-2 or another distribution. For Marvel Rivals, 2-2-2 is a common community proposal—not a confirmed system.

How do I avoid unbalanced open-queue teams?

Call your main and backup roles early, check who owns engage and sustain, and make one swap after a clear failed fight. A reliable fix is queueing with a teammate whose role pool complements yours.

The Status Is No—Your Next Match Still Needs a Plan

Marvel Rivals role queue is not live, and NetEase has given no date for it. Until that changes, the practical edge is not winning the argument in hero select—it is entering with a backup role, one clear caller, and someone you trust to flex.
