Start Your WoW Gearing Guide With a Slot Audit

Write down your three weakest slots before queueing anything. Use actual performance value—main stat, useful secondary stats, set value, and item effect—not the color of the item-level number.

For each slot, record:

• Current item and item level.
• Available upgrade path.
• Content that can replace it.
• Whether a Great Vault choice could solve it this reset.

This prevents the classic mistake: spending on a temporary upgrade, then replacing it with the exact slot from the Vault.

Choose One Midnight Season 2 Gearing Lane

Blizzard’s Season 2 unlock schedule gives players several parallel sources. Pick the lane you will repeat consistently.

World content, Delves, and Lairs

This is the low-friction lane. Blizzard’s pre-season details say Pinnacle Caches began dropping Season 2 Veteran gear, while Bountiful Delves and Keys opened with Season 2. Lairs also opened Normal, Heroic, and Mythic difficulties the week of August 18.

Use this lane when you want short sessions or need to fill several weak slots before organized content.

Heroic, Mythic 0, and Mythic+

The Season 2 pool covers five Midnight dungeons plus Kings’ Rest, Temple of Sethraliss, and Ruby Life Pools. Blizzard lists Mythic 0 as dropping item level 292 gear and moving to a daily reset once Season 2 began.

Raid Finder and organized raiding

Venomous Abyss opened Normal, Heroic, Mythic, and Raid Finder Wing 1 on August 18. Wing 2 and Story Mode opened August 25, followed by the final two Raid Finder wings on September 1 and September 8.

Blizzard’s official raid overview lists level 90 and item level 273 as the Raid Finder floor. Entry is only the first check; boss preparation decides whether the night converts into useful kills.

Use a Weekly WoW Gearing Loop

The best time to choose a weekly target is after opening the Great Vault—not after spending every currency on reset morning.

Reset day: compare choices

Open the Vault. Compare each option against your three weak slots and the content you can realistically complete this week.

Blizzard said the first Season 2 World-row Vault reward was capped at Champion 3/6. Subsequent World-row Vaults can reach Hero 1/6, and Voidcore bonus rolls became available the week of August 25 for players with at least three panes unlocked.

Midweek: run targeted content

Choose activities that can solve a named slot. If you need a specific raid drop, run the right wing. If several slots are weak, use broader sources before spending heavily.

Weekend: spend after the key drops

By the end of the week, you know which slots refused to move. Spend to strengthen durable pieces, then write the next reset’s top three targets.

⚡ Pro Tip: A piece you will keep for several weeks deserves more upgrade investment than a sidegrade you equipped because it was available.

Delay Upgrade Spending Until the Plan Is Clear

Before spending, ask four questions:

1. Can this slot drop from content I will run again today?
2. Is this piece part of a set or build I am committing to?
3. Does the upgrade improve useful stats or only item level?
4. Would waiting until the end of the weekly block change the decision?

I believe patience is the underrated gearing skill. Players do not usually regret waiting two runs. They regret spending early and watching the replacement drop immediately afterward.

⚠️ Watch Out: Do not trade away an upgrade because somebody pressures you. Check whether the item is actually tradable and whether your own character needs it first.

Gear With a Teammate Without Sharing an Account

A reliable teammate removes planning friction. They can hold the complementary role, keep queues moving, track the weekly target list, and help review drops after each block.

Split the jobs:

• One player tracks target slots and starts the next queue.
• One player checks role coverage, repairs, and consumables.
• Both players review drops before spending upgrades.

That relationship matters more than one lucky item. If your usual group is offline, find a World of Warcraft teammate on Tapin for a defined dungeon, Delve, or raid-prep block.

Keep account access private. Nobody needs your password to tank, heal, explain a route, or run repeat content beside you.

Turn Gear Into Content You Actually Want to Play

Gear is not the finish line. It is permission to enter the content you care about with fewer weak points.

Use a Replacement Test for Every New Drop

New does not automatically mean better. Run each drop through a quick replacement test before equipping, upgrading, trading, or vendoring it.

Check the permanent value

Ask whether the piece completes a set, carries an effect your build uses, or fixes a slot that is difficult to target. Those qualities can matter more than a small raw item-level increase.

If you are unsure, keep both items until the weekly block ends. The bag slot costs less than upgrading the wrong piece.

Check the next likely source

Look at what you are about to run. If the next raid wing or dungeon can replace the same slot, hold your currency. If the slot has stayed weak for two resets and no planned activity targets it, the current piece becomes a stronger investment.

Check the real session goal

A player preparing for Mythic+ may value a different stat mix or effect than a player building only for Raid Finder. Gear for the content you will actually play this week.

Keep an Alt From Repeating the Whole Grind

Alts need a narrower plan than mains. Start with broad sources that can improve many slots, then move into the content lane the alt is meant to play.

Use this order:

1. Finish access requirements and equip obvious catch-up upgrades.
2. Run world content, Delves, or Mythic 0 while several slots remain weak.
3. Choose one repeat lane: Mythic+, raid, or another defined goal.
4. Stop farming broad content when most rewards become sidegrades.

The stopping rule matters. A catch-up route becomes wasted time once it stops catching the character up.

For a role-swapped alt, run the first group block with somebody patient enough to let you learn the new job. State that expectation before the invite. “Fresh healer, learning +2 routes, completion goal” finds a very different group from a silent application.
